During pregnancy

Osteopathic treatment throughout pregnancy helps to ensure that the body is properly aligned and the nervous and immune systems are well balanced. It can be especially helpful with the following:

Nausea, Vomiting and Indigestion

Osteopathy can help by easing the pressure on the liver and calm the nervous system, reducing tension and stress.

Aches, Pains and fatigue

Osteopathy is especially useful in helping the body to re-align itself, reducing back pain, sciatica, headaches and fatigue.

Heartburn

The growing uterus puts increasing pressure on the stomach and gut which becomes squashed underneath the diaphragm. Sometimes some of the contents of the stomach leak into the oesophagus giving heartburn symptoms. Osteopathy can help by easing out the stresses and strain upon the diaphragm as well as balancing the nerves supplying the gut.

Breathlessness

With advancing pregnancy, the mother’s diaphragm gets pushed up into the lower chest and the spine and ribs also change their position of balance. This alters the ability of the lungs to expand resulting in breathlessness Osteopathy can help to restore the thoracic excursion so that lung capacity is more available.

Constipation, frequent need to irunate, haemmorhoids, varicose veins

Whilst the uterus with its developing baby and placenta gets pushed up, the bladder and bowels can get pushed down onto the pelvic floor. The pressure can give the need to pass water frequently, and can also cause constipation. The congestion slows up the flow of blood in the veins, giving rise to haemorrhoids (piles) and varicose veins and aching legs. Osteopathy can help in rebalancing the tension of the diaphragm and pelvic floor so that the position of the organs and their supporting structures are not adversely affected.
